Our beloved founder, father & friend Jeff Pyfer opened the doors of the original Satori in 1969. The store was originally located in what was one of the first hippie mini-malls in Webster’s Attic, along with a leather shop, record store, poster shop, slogan button business, & artists’ studios. In 1975 or so, Satori moved to its current location at 411 N Main St. Jeff sadly passed away in May, 2014, but his family plans to keep his legacy alive & keep Satori the same great destination it’s always been!
Our logo: so what is that winged creature we use in the middle of our logo??
From Greek mythology, he is Icarus, son of Daedalus. They were trapped in the Minotaur’s labyrinth, and fashioned wings of wax and feathers to try to escape. Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun or the wax in the wings would melt. But Icarus, the original thrill seeker, was too enthralled with flying, and soared too high. His wings melted, he crashed and burned, drowning in what became known as the Icarian Sea.
So the moral, as we see it? Listen to the wise, find your way out of the maze, soar to new heights, live on the edge, and don’t be afraid to take a few chances. We did, and here we are, 50 years and counting of peace and love on Main Street. And what a long, strange and wonderful trip it continues to be!
